A Fine Balance

A heartbreaking work of genius, A Fine Balance is the third novel by Rohinton Mistry. With a compassionate realism this novel captures all the cruelty and corruption, dignity and heroism of India. Set in  Mumbai, in 1975 at a time when the government has declared a state of internal emergency, the story focuses on the lives of four unlikely people who find themselves living in the same humble flat in the city. It is a sweeping novel which deals with love, injustice, pain, kindness, violence and compassion. Although it may be hard to read at times, I highly recommend that you read this book.

After Mistry's anything-but-sentimental ending A Fine Balance will leave an imprint in your mind that won’t wear off. I read the book four years ago and have yet to forget it.
