Light a Penny Candle - Maeve Binchy

Recently, upon arriving at our hotel, I discovered I had left my newly purchased novel at home (I had been having a sneak peek). Sometimes hotels have a "swap table". I left the Sydney Morning Herald and picked up Light a penny candle by Maeve Binchy, the only book in English.

As a child from war- torn London, Elizabeth White was evacuated to Ireland to the family of her mother's best friend. The boisterous O'Connors immediately adopted her as one of their own. It was in this chaotic household that Elizabeth met Aisling, pronounced Ashleen, who would become her lifelong friend. Aisling's boldness brought Elizabeth out of her shell. Aishling's comfort carried her through the ending of her parent's marriage. Elizabeth's friendship supported Aisling during her marriage to a violent alcoholic. The girls believed they could overcome anything, and they did. They even shared a lover!

This book is full of warmth with believable human characters, but be prepared for the surprise ending.
This was an easy, enjoyable read.
