Milkweed / Jerry Spinelli

"A beautifully written parable about daring to be different." The Guardian

Milkweed is the moving story of Misha, or 'Stopthief' as he was often called, who doesn't know if he is a Jew or a Gypsy. Set in Nazi-occupied Warsaw, we follow Misha's journey through the streets of Poland, to the ghetto and beyond. We see his admiration for the German soldiers, 'Jackboots', and the slow realisation of what is happening around him. Although the brutality is not graphic, it is clearly present, and seen through Misha's innocent perspective.
Historically accurate, the book is a compelling and harrowing read. The writing is fast-paced and the sentences short and simple, though at times quite lyrical and descriptive.
Milkweed is a powerful and poetic tale of survival.
