I've been on a Stephen King binge this month having discovered the beauty of the horror genre with Carrie. Salem's Lot is a little bit different from Carrie. It is less thought-provoking and the storyline is somewhat cliched however it is still entertaining and actually a little creepy.
The story is set in the small, quiet American town of Jerusalem's Lot. It has the usual characters you'd expect to find in a small town such as the 'Drunk' and the 'Gossip' It also has a history. There is an old house on the Hill that was once the site of a brutal murder - no one has lived in it since.
Enter Ben Mears, a published author who spent some of his childhood in the Lot and had a very creepy encounter in that old house. He returns to this town to face his past Demons and write a new book about that house. At the same time, new inhabitants occupy the house. These new inhabitants are not your typical neighbours, however - one of them is a Vampire and not surprisingly, one by one the community members start acting strangely. By strangely I mean, staying out of sunlight, developing long white fangs and sucking people's blood. Only Ben Mears and his small group of believers can stop these blood suckers before they take over the entire town.
You can see now why I describe this book as a little cliched - it comes complete with the big haunted mansion, a whole lot of stakes, Vampire folklore, crucifixes and even garlic. Nevertheless it is a fun novel and I'd recommend it for light reading . . . while all alone . . . in your big house. It's ok, the Vampires only come in if you invite them.
