Hand me down world by Lloyd Jones

A puzzle that is unravelled by the telling of the story by many different witnesses.

A woman we come to know as Ines works as a maid in a resort hotel in Tunisia. She suddenly abandons her job, and through the eyes of observers such as a policeman, a truck driver and some hunters, we follow her perilous journey from Africa all the way to Berlin. We can see she is desperate, but why is she travelling there? She has no money, no possessions, no identity cards and, at the outset, no friends.

Our understanding of Ines’ story changes as a series of narrators give us their perspective of their encounter with her. They have each drawn their own contradictory conclusions – and the reader forms their own. Finally we get to hear Ines’ own version of her journey.

I found this a compelling tale and thoroughly enjoyed the read.
